Smart Calendar is an INIT/Application combination. Drag the INIT to your System folder. System 7 will put it where it belongs. Put the application in the Apple Menu Items folder. SmartCal will create a file called "SmartCal Notes" in the System Folder when first opened.
The Calendar program allows you to save messages, and the INIT reminds you of them when you start up your Macintosh or when the date changes. Reminders may be done one of two ways: a flashing icon telling you to look at the calendar, or an alert box which contains the message.
Features: Supports yearly, monthly, weekly and special messages.
For example: To have SmartCal tell you "Merry Christmas" each year, click on Dec, then on 25, then on the "Yearly" button. Type "Merry Christmas" into the text window.
Monthly and Weekly messages are entered the same way. Monthly messages occur once a month on the selected day, such as "Rent Due" on the 1st. Weekly messages occur on the selected day of the week.
A check mark next to the button indicates that a message of that type is set for the currently selected date. Dates that have a Daily message are outlined. Because of speed considerations, this is not currently done for other types of messages.
Special messages are those that occur on one or more weekdays during a month, such as first Sunday, or second and last Tuesday. Special Messages are handled differently. The text window shows all the Special messages for the current date. Messages cannot be edited here, but may be copied to the clipboard. Since the same message can appear on a combination of dates, they must be edited in the "Set Special…" dialog box under the "Calendar" menu. Check the combination of days for which this message will appear, then enter the message.
Use the "Options…" dialog box to set the number of times per day the Daily message will appear, either every time you start your Mac, or only a limited number of startups. All other types appear on each startup or date change.
Smart Cal Converter converts the Notes file into a Text file which may be used with Calendar Maker by CE Software, or read by any word processor.
Bug Fixes from V1.0: Improvements have been made to the editing commands. Smart Calendar now writes consistently to the clipboard, and the Edit menu flashes when Command key equivalents are used. Memory problems which caused strange errors under MultiFinder and some advanced Macs have been fixed. It also uses an existing font size when 10 point Application font (usually Geneva) is not available, instead of scaling.
Bug Fixes from V2.3: Corrected the Set Special dialog to accept Edit menu command keys and backspace.
Bug Fixes from V2.3.2: Corrected display of day names in foreign language systems.
Version 2.3.3: Fixed a problem caused by Suitcase and System 7
Version 2.3.4: Highlight all days that have messages.
Version 2.4: Converted to application for System 7. Fixed some memory problems. INIT is not guaranteed compatible with System 6.
Some people have reported INIT incompatibilities, especially with INIT's that post messages. I have been unable to isolate this problem as yet. If you have this problem, and can identify the INIT(s) that SmartCal is incompatible with, please let me know.
I have one report of a user who got an "Unable to create a notes file" alert. If this happens, please let me know so I can get more data to fix it. You can create an empty file in any program, name it "SmartCal Notes" exactly, and put it in the System file.
Smart Calendar has been tested on a Mac Plus and an LC. If you have any problems please contact me. If you like it, please send $10.
